The gates of heaven and the New Jerusalem are named after the 12 tribes of Israel. Each gate has the name of a pilgrim. The journey to heaven was a pilgrimage for all who enter there. Some like Reuben started well and finished badly, some like Levi started badly but finished as priests in God's temple and some like Asher had the privelage of handling kingly joys.
